I used to be a firm believer in straight axles. However, even the military is going to IFS on most things. You do lose a bit of simplicity and some articulation on the really rough stuff, but IFS is much better on road and comparable off road until you get into some pretty hardcore trails. It kind of depends on the use you have intended.
