You are correct in that the bottom pic is a old vs. new comparison. Little difference in pad thickness eh?
The upper pic is of the entire brake caliper. The gap between the pads is where the Rotor resides.
If you notice the top of the right-hand side pad, that is the brake sensor. When this begins to rub on the rotor for very long, it will toss a light on your instrument cluster (read: very important to change ASAP).
I'm not familiar with Mintex wear vs. MB OEM. At the next brake pad change interval when the rotors are included, I may investigate Hawk High Performance brake pads...
