Personally, I believe there is a genuine need for some sort of meal assistance for the unfortunate folks living below the poverty level. However, it also pisses me off when I hear stories of folks buying non-essential stuff with these EBT cards.
It seems a lot of the abuse of the meal assistance program can be curbed at the retail level. I don't understand why the fed doesn't require retailers to restrict the purchases to essential nutritional needs. That would prohibit the purchase of alcohol/tobacco and non-essential items with the EBT cards. If retailers are caught violating the restrictions on EBT purchases, they ought to be fined.
