Servis was not running for the Governor's position. He was running to place the Libertarians on the 2016 ballot in Virginia.

To be on the ballot in a state wide race there are requirements to be met. The Libertarians met the requirements and ran someone.

To be on the ballot in a nationwide race, (i.e.), the President, a party must pull ten percent of the state wide vote. The Libertarians pulled seven percent, so the bid to run a national race there is lost for 2016.

Did the Libertarians take funding from sources outside their traditional ones? Perhaps, but if so this is a very old ploy and frankly everyone is involved in this type of thing.

But those of you from the state might be in a better position to comment on my line of thought, and any corrections to this post would be welcome.
