I suspect that the same factors drove Cuccinelli's loss in Virginia. If you look at the last six Virginia Governors, the ones who remained popular with the voters were the ones who focused on good management. The two who got in trouble with the voters (Allen and Gilmore) abandoned the Virginia tradition of pay-as-you-go, prudent government and focused instead on ideological gimmicks. Cuccinelli is almost nothing but ideological gimmicks. IMHO, that's why the voters held their noses and elected a non-Virginian political operative to be our next Governor.
