A low wattage soldering iron works much better. MB seems to use the same pot from at least 79 to 92 that I have physically seen. They do break and they sure do corrode.

Worst case, pop your instrument cluster and clean the dimmer pot where you can see it. In a 93, you will have to loosen your speedo cable to get the cluster out.
