What I have always done in endorsing a check over to someone else is to write on the back " Pay to the order of" and write in their name.and sign it. I do this when I mail in a check for deposit to my brokerage account , where I write on the back "for deposit only" and then sign it.

But in this case I think I would deposit it, wait for it to clear then use credit card.
