i guess a compression test is in order; not that i could do much about it if i found low compression.... i had been avoiding the test when my motor was running well for the same reason!

What was the noise like? Was it continuous (spinning mass, like flywheel,
chains, front balance pulley) or periodic (reciprocating piston/ring/conrod or valve tappet)

i think the latter. it was like a nasty grittiness had been added to the normal engine sound. could any part of the valve assembly make this much noise?
not sure if throwout bearing was replaced. the clutch feel while the problem was occurring was normal.
