When I was a kid on the farm during the winter of 1981-82, we had -40F wind chill temps. Dad had a number of Edison socket heating elements that he would use on job site. He ran a couple of them under his truck and draped old mover's blankets around the base of the truck to warm it up enough to be able to start in the morning.

Sometime in the very late 1980's and into possibly 1990, we had some impressive cold snaps that gave us -15 to -20 windchill temps. I had to use that same tactic on my car until I decided to get a dipstick heater. Since then, I've tried to make sure that at least one of my vehicles have a block heater. Currently, the Tahoe and my F-250 have block heaters.
