I also live in MI and the plates on my '97 S500 were roughly $325. (And we get such nice roads for our money!)

The good news is that the Feds consider this a personal property tax (the license fee is based on the base price of the car when new) and as such it can be written off on your taxes. (Not much consolation really.)
