"Nodding down" a properly adjusted mask is really no big deal. If you're only going to weld occasionally an autodark will be okay. If you're going to weld a LOT, it will take a toll on your eyes. I expect that the cheap auto darks, don't have a very quick response time.

Be careful with your eyes. They're the only pair you'll ever get.
