The metal rod is seated sort of behind the light switch, to the left of the steeringwheel... It goes from the steeringwheel-axle towards the left door-post... Sort of, I suck at explaning...

The connector is a distribution-block, for the signal to the engine tachometer(revs)

You don't need any of those things to get your outside temp gauge to work or fit...
