My first .22 was a 50s/early 60s bolt action Sears J. C. Higgins rifle with a scope. Got it from my Uncle when I was 13.
Looks very similar to the above Sears 42.
Last year I loaned it to my nephew along with my first gun, a Stevens single shot break action 20 gauge shotgun (with a shortened stock and with a pad - for youthful shooters).
For his 13th birthday, last September, I gave him the J. C. Higgins .22.
He called me that evening and told me that is the best present he's ever received.
Satisfying.
