Buying new? Ruger's extensive .357 line are built like tanks and take serious punishment. I'm liking this one a lot, having fondled but not shot one. Yet. 900 dollar MSRP, it'll go for that for a while and then drop a hundred or so. Ruger's new offerings are always butt slow getting into the distributor stream. Search Ruger's site by caliber to see their extensive .357 lineup.

If buying used I'd look for a Security 6, Speed 6 or Service 6 (round butt, rare and sweet) in a 4 inch bbl. You can shoot the beejeezus out of a Ruger magnum and pass it on to your grandkids and they can do the same thing.
I own a bunch of Smiths in .357, they are jewels, but I wouldn't shoot consistently hot loads through them. Mine are mostly once or twice a year safe queens. Rugers are workhorses. Yeah, they're investment cast. Pssssht.
