The Mac was Apple's successful attempt to enter the business market after the Apple III and Lisa Office debacles.
In 1984: Apple II = school and home use. Very few people had an IBM clone at home (I thought my aunt's AT&T 6300 was weird, she was given it because she was a programmer for AT&T).
IBM clones = business/office use.
Interesting that we've come full circle around, with Macs and iPads taking the place of the Apple II's market, and Windows boxes being used more in the office.
