This method of hunting and trapping has only been in existence since the late 60's, and previous to the international whaling laws, essentially no Japanese had ever eaten a dolphin.
The real reason is to sell the dolphins to zoos and parks, they just hide this enterprise behind the fake 'tradition' of taking dolphin for food.

I did read something that some of the fishermen said it was a cultural thing. If that is your excuse for consuming meat with 10 times the amount of mercury allowed, fine. If they want to claim it is cultural and eat it, I'm good. If you say it is your culture to eat cyanide, you surely don't expect me to tell you that I forbid it, do you? It is your right to eat the meat. Again, don't expect me to feel sorry when you have heavy metal poisoning.
