That is correct. Human technical civilization is not eco-freindly. Never was and never will be. In the past we were small bands of hunter gatherers and our impact was minimal. With technological advance our impact becomes catastrophic. Consequently we need to change our ways or face disaster of various forms.

As for the cultural aspect of this. AS CMB said. culture my ass. It's a money making racket since the 60's primarily fed by zoos like Seaworld etc, hiding behind the smokescreen of food harvesting and "traditional practices".

There are people globally who are outraged by this and are using what methods they have to pressure representatives to act. But governments are slow, they don't meddle easily in others affairs and so its still mostly the likes of Sea Shepard for now.
