I started on an aggressive campaign to sell everything I could on Ebay to clear my house by the time the youngest goes to college in two years, and one of the first auctions was a non-payer. I was very impressed with Ebay customer service. The guy answered every question, did whatever he had to relative to the non-payer, discussed the 10% Ebay fee, et cet. Non-payers get zapped pretty hard, eg. two infractions and you're banned.

If I were "John", I would just put it back out there and see what the market bears. I ended up getting more money once I reposted the item not paid for. My .02 and GOOD LUCK !!!
