I had a MB with this problem, similar vintage but I think was an S class. There is a sort of flap which cuts off fuel in the event of a rollover (mechanically blocks the filler neck with a flap), IRRC there is a weight that should have been on this mechanism but was missing so the fuel flow would make the flapper shut.
