It's because, like many behaviors, it falls neatly under the "slippery slope" theory of morality.
But you already knew that. What you really meant to say is that you think the argument is obnoxious and without merit and wish it would go away.
I agree that it is obnoxious but I see not evidence that it is without merit. Do you?
