The problem with WBC is no matter what you show them, indifference, violence, acceptance, ect; its all gonna be processed to support their belief in their eyes.

-You beat the crap out of them, that just shows you aren't ready to accept Gods punishment, and are lashing out at his messengers.
-You ignore them, that just shows that you accept Gods judgement and agree, but aren't ready to embrace Gods will yet.

So it matters little what others do, so trying to ignore them is in a way letting them win at their own game because its kind of a forfeit.

You guys did it right, you showed them that you would respect their right to protest just as you have a right to counter protest, and as soon as their allotted time was up, you showed them their tentative welcome was now worn out, and they were now on borrowed time as it were.
