Byrd attempted some sort of repentance from his earlier days IMHO, something that I can't say for Strom Thurmond. After his death it became clear that while Thurmond came down 4 square on keeping blacks 'out of our churches, our schools, and our swimming pools' he was OK with having at least one of them in his bed.
