One of my lunch buddies today was defending the racist Bundy. My friend said that in many cases the slaves would have had it better than free blacks now. He said his grandfather probably had slaves, presuming grandpa was one of the "Good" masters. I said lack of freedom and the fear of the master doing whatever he wished including raping your wife and or female daughters or selling family members to another plantation would trump whatever perceived security in having three meals and a roof would have if enslaved.
Then he said I was practically a slave myself, what choice did I have, I have to pay taxes etc? (My father worked in the Studebaker factory and I am an Architect thanks to the accessibility of higher education for everybody in the late sixties, early seventies.) I said I could do whatever I wished and did...and do.
Would any of these opportunities have been available to a slave? No....not except in a very very few cases.
