300D Transplant Question
This is my first post on this forum, although I've been lurking for a while. Seems like a bunch of friendly, knowledgeable people.
I'm looking at a 1980 non-turbo 300TD in the next few days. After a pretty extensive email exchange with the owner, I think this car has probably been pretty well maintained over the 10 years this guy has owned it, but the AC hasn't worked for at least that long. I haven't seen the car in person yet, so I don't know any more detailed information about the AC than just that. The owner says he's been getting by without AC, and he's got a bunch of other, newer cars, so I can kind of believe that. Considering the cost of repairing the ACCII system, his for sale price is pretty reasonable.
I have a pretty good parts car, a 1982 300D turbo sedan with a really good motor, a 4-spd from a 240D, and a working climate control system. (But it's really, really ugly looking.) The plan, of course, is to transplant the turbo motor and 4-spd into the 300TD (either the for-sale 1980 car or another one in the future).
I've read most of the threads on this forum about dealing with the ACCII, about the various options, which seem to run from fixing the stock system, bypassing the servo one way or another, or going the 240D manual route. (That one vaguely reminds me of the ordeal with my Alfa GTV-6 when the factory plastic heater valves went NLA.)
My question, in case you couldn't see it coming, is, when the motor and tranny come out of the turbo sedan to go into a car with the ACCII system, is it a practical option to also swap out the entire climate control system from the '82 turbo sedan into the 1980 300TD at the same time?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
