Yeah, I have heard that kind of story also - they are real ingenious with parts: for emergency air filters they use grandma's hair nets, for instance.

I ever get down there, I'd really be sure and bring several sets of old 1950's Chevy and Ford spark plugs, to give away!

Back when I was married, a dozen years ago we got a ride from Lima Peru, down the Panamericana Highway to see the Nazca Lines by air, at Ica near the coastal desert.

The taxicab was an immaculate 1966 Oldsmobile f85, beautiful maroon, not its original color because the seats were blue cloth brocade.

The driver told me its motor was a Nissan diesel engine!
