Is there a way to force the A/C compressor to come on?

I'm not talking about pushing defrost on the control unit. What I'm looking for is a way to short a sensor or short a wire in the engine compartment to turn on the compressor. My compressor will not start when I engage the A/C. The connections on the compressor itself are rather inaccessible to be able to apply 12V directly, and the wires from the compressor clutch appear to disappear into a wrapped cable. Don't know where that comes out.

My A/C was working last fall, but now things have warmed and the compressor won't engage. I believe I know that low or no R-12 will cause a no engage condition, but I don't have gauges. I'd like to force the compressor to run at least for a short time to see if it starts to cool.

Rgds,
