If it sounds like a valve tic it probably is. I battled this on my 87 300SDL for months. Pulled cam, tested lifters seemed all good, replaced lifters (approx $180) fixed problem. Do make sure you do not have an exhaust manifold leak which can cause a similar sound. Sometimes manifold bolts will loosen.
