Pretty sure that neither the Germans nor the Czechs bothered checking anything other than my ticket for an intra-EU flight in ~2009. I could also buy longer-distance train tickets (equivalent to Amtrak) for cash without being carded. This "need ID for everything" nonsense in the US is going way too far.
Glad that there's at least some pushback against voter ID laws -- hopefully this turns into a trend. If the pushback enables a few terrorists or drug dealers, so be it. That's the price of living in a free society.
PS - "never?" How old are you? 20 years ago, we used to walk my sister to the gate at Laguardia to see her off when she went back to college. We had to go through the metal detector like everyone else, but no one checked our papers (or hers, beyond having a valid ticket in hand when boarding). A lot of things changed to excess, all because of an isolated incident that killed one-tenth of the people who die in traffic accidents every year. In short, we overreacted to a blip on the radar, and the 4000 or so deaths were just the price of living in a free society.
