Having grown up with a father who was a draftsman and mech. engineer...our family projects often ended up with "I don't care if it _looks_ bigger on that end...mic it and lets see." The micrometer is a revered and hallowed tool that still sits in the padded leather case it came in back in 1958 at my folks house. I don't know how much a good mic costs these days, but in the long run it will be worth it.
