What kills me...we were playing on the floor about 45 minutes prior to this, and we were both doing our normal song and dance this morning...like nothing was wrong.
I don't know who's taking it harder...my wife or my kids. My son has been sitting on the porch since we got back tonight, in tears. We've all been crying...
It's like losing a child.

I hear you. I lost my big lovable mutt "Freckles" on 30. January very unexpectedly. She would have been 10 two weeks later. I was just recovering from prostate surgery and it was very hard. I work at home, and she was my constant companion, although it hit both my wife and I equally hard.
A month ago, we adopted a rescue named "Billy". Billy is half pit bull and half Boston terrier. He's a joy to have around. He's "the littlest pit bull" at 38 lbs- a portapuppy with a big dog personality.
Maybe in time a rescue might be a good idea. At first, Billy just made me miss Freckles even more, but that only lasted about a day. The neat thing about pups is that each one is his/ her own brand of love.
After Freckles, we decided no more dogs- the end is just too hard, and this wasn't either one of our first rodeos- by any means. But the house just seemed way too empty without a damn mutt.
BTW- my wife used to raise Boxers- they are very cool dogs.
