I knew a guy that had the most worthless parents that ever lived. He turned out to be very successful. I asked him what role his parents played in his life and he said he just knew he did not want to turn out like them.
But he had other role models in that his friends parents were educated and successful. He saw it could be done and what it took to get there but he would have never figured it out if the only adults he knew were his parents.
So yeah, parents are a big factor. Just a little bit of help goes a long, long way even if it comes from adults that are not the child's parent.
Membership in something like the Boy Scouts will also help in this area of positive adult role models.
