In law school one of the great legal terms taught in wills & trusts is "laughing heir." Since the law will go to great lengths to avoid any estate going to the state (escheat), often a distant relative who may have had no personal contact with the deceased or even aware of the family relationship will be the beneficiary . . . the laughing heir.
