My Mom got her undergrad degree with a major in French lit (Phi Beta Kappa Penn State). During WWII she got commissioned into the USN and worked in cryptography. 6 children and 40 years later she wrote her M.A. thesis on early Fr colonial architecture in Louisiana. Fr lit worked for her to make an interesting life.
I think I was 16 or 17 when I read Candide and it blew my mind. Much as Ayn Rand did during the same time period. Later I read Plato and Aristotle then Kant. After that I dabbled in a few philosophers across time but never really gave them a serious read, more like familiarization and reference. I discovered organic evolution and that changed the direction I was going.
