I think I was 16 or 17 when I read Candide and it blew my mind. Much as Ayn Rand did during the same time period. Later I read Plato and Aristotle then Kant. After that I dabbled in a few philosophers across time but never really gave them a serious read, more like familiarization and reference. I discovered organic evolution and that changed the direction I was going.
Cryptography is the coolest. I don't know what I would study if I got a chance to do a second career. Probably a science, maybe some form of hard maths or physics. Medicine is also v. appealing. Your mother sounds like a very impressive person. p.s. Kant is so tedious, but sometimes so spot on.
