I rarely, if ever post in OD, but having been a real estate agent in a previous life, I thought I'd jump in...

Sorry Joe, you put that agent in a precarious situation just from a security standpoint. He or she:

- was the responsible party in opening up a privately owned property
- didn't know you from Adam
- would not/could not keep tabs on the whereabouts in the property of all the parties had he/she let you in

As noted by others above, property viewings are by appointment (except during an Open House). You were crashing the party, so to speak, on a scheduled business meeting of others.

I suspect you caused some alarm in the showing agent and that agent reacted clumsily because of that consternation (fear).

Had it been me, I would have done the same (refused your immediate entry) although I would have asked you to contact me for your own showing and given you my card (a prospect is a prospect).

In a nutshell, you barged in on a private business activity in a manner that caused security concerns at the least if not outright disbelief and incredulity over your actions in so doing. The proper thing for you to do would have been to call for a showing appointment of your own or at worst, briefly interrupt their private business to ask that showing agent for his/her card and express interest in the property for a later showing (still a boorish action - the first option is the correct way to have conducted yourself).

Regards to all,
Kevin
