You just described the cars that I drove the most and enjoyed the most, and I was in that age bracket when I did it.
I bought my first 240D new in 1977 at the age of 28. It was a four speed manual, manual windows, manual climate control, no sunroof, with a radio. I drove it 280,000 miles. I then bought a Euro 240D, '84 model, same equipment except it had a manual sunroof. It had 17,000 miles when I bought it and 450,000 miles when I sold it to my son for a token price when he turned 16. At that point I was 47.
If it were possible to buy a brand new 240D like one of those I would be first in line. As an engineer, I firmly believe in the KISS principle.
