Gary, the black barrel comes off when the tool releases the ignition tumbler. A coat hanger may not be the correct diameter. As I recall I used a piece of copper wire, either 12AWG or 14AWG, when I made the tool. The angle and orientation of the bevel on the tool ends are critical. It takes a certain "feel" to get the tool to release the ignition tumbler. You will understand what I'm saying when you get yours out. The process is very simple once you have done it one time. The key should be in the ignition and turned to Position 1 when you insert the tool into the release slots. If you are unsure about Position 1 refer to the diagram in your Owner's Manual.
