People still send nuisance faxes to numbers. That's the main reason I still have an inexpensive landline with a machine to screen incoming calls, and automatically reject faxes.
I agree with jake, if it's important enough for me to consider a reply, then they can leave a message.
My friends know that if they say 'pick it up' and I hear them, I will. It's simple and effective and no annoying faxes or unsolicited time wasters.
I have an old 'clamshell' cell phone that I only use for outgoing calls or communicating on a jobsite; it provides all the 'connectedness' I need for a flat hundred bucks per year. This communications technology is for my convenience, not theirs.
