RT:
I had Aquatreds or some such on the Volvo -- the very worst tires I've ever had, made the car almost undrivable in the snow. I very narrowly avoided running it in the ditch last year, and my brother did actually go off the road backwards this year -- shallow ditch, no damage, fortunately.
I replaced the tires with Firestone Affinity LS 30s a couple weeks ago, and the difference was amazing -- even at intersections where there were obvious tire spin marks, I had superb traction, no sliding or spinning at all. Quite a dirfference.
The W116 won't be the best car ever in snow, and the turbo won't help much, either -- that blast of torque when it comes up can cause all sorts of tire adhesion problems -- but you shouldn't slip and slide badly, certainly no more so that in any other heavy car!
