Driveline slop and noises
I'm really stoked that the W108 is firing up and running strong once it warms up. The Pertronix conversion is on order and I can't wait to throw it in and toss the points.
I want to turn my attention to the underside. I'm experiencing the following issues, probably a result of sitting since '86:
1) Some drive line vibration and a rattle noise from the trunk area. More pronounced in certain RPM ranges, under load and on the over-run. Clutch in and it disappears completely. Best way to describe it is to think of carrying a thick slab of sheet metal in the trunk that is rattling - combination of rattling with a grinding feel.
2) Manual tranny shifts hard once warm. Reverse crunchy unless I shift into a forward gear first - air in clutch line?
3) General sloppy feel in the drive line. Hard clunks in the trunk if I step on the gas hard.
4) Noisy valve train area even after valve adjustment. Pulls very strong and sounds like a party under the valve cover. Noise doesn't bother me, but want to ensure it's not a sign of trouble.
What's the right way of tackling the driveline? The rattle/grind is driving me bonkers and really spoiling and otherwise fantastic driving experience. Flex disc *looks* ok and the center bearing has ~0.5 - 1 cm play if I put muscle into it.
Cheers,
Alex
