What should be done may be influenced to some extent on what the problem with it seemed to be. Depends on cost in your area as well.

If the head is warped or not should always be checked of course. On these diesel heads you do not have a lot of correction allowed if it is.

A good visual inspection plus some penetrating dye can be done by the owner as well for cracks if not visually obvious. This after a proper clean up. A cheap black light bulb should do okay with the right dye. I figure the dyes that react under black light might be cheaper than some other ones that require more steps.
