I usually check the oil and coolant first thing in the morning.
Good to take a look at the tires for flats or low pressure before pulling away from the house too.

I always check my oil when on a trip, after filling up with fuel. It has sat 5 minutes or more and even if all the oil has not run back to the pan, it will be close. Pull the stick out, wipe it off, stick it back in and pull it back out and see where you are at.

Do a quick visual around the engine for other problems, coolant/oil/fuel leaks, fan belts, any thing getting loose etc....
