My understanding is that the 1985 California-spec w123 had a completely different "coffee can" air filter housing and filter element that sat at the front of the engine bay, to accommodate the space taken up by the CA the emissions equipment. So there would have been some alternative plumbing arrangement for the oil drain.

If the 1985 motor that was installed was a CA-spec one, then it sounds like someone bolted on the 1982 manifold.
