I think yours falls in to the year range where they updated the resistor and I think the whole blower needs to be replaced? Do you remember what was all replaced the last time? Has the dust filter been replaced lately? I can't remember if yours also has the charcoal filter.
I don't really think that someone changing the fan speed would affect the life of the resistor or blower.
Hey it's possible if just the resistor was changed that that the motor could be going bad by coincidence, I mean 400K miles.......
But of course on that car it is automatic so ideally she would just set the temp she wants and put it in AUTO and leave it alone, unless the defroster needs to be used.
