You did not use a question mark in there ... but I am assuming one...

You are completely backwards in your description....

A compression test will tell the relative condition of EACH CYLINDER.... so go for it......best test you can do... if one is very low then you can do leak down to determine if problem is in the head/valves or in the bore/rings/piston....
