If you've got heavy sludge the oil returns are blocked. Oil builds up under the valve cover and gets sucked past the valve stem seals. Smoke and rough running are the symptoms. Not uncommon to the M112. IMHO, your guy should have seen this when he was in there. It's pretty obvious......
