Hello Paul:
Thanks for your message. I have a '93 190e as well, and my transmission does very similar things to yours. I have found two things helpful to get the tranny operating well:
1. If you need to go at high speeds right off the bat like I do, let it idle for about 5min. before you begin driving - it makes a world of difference.
2. When you first start, be gentle - don't punch the acclerator, and when you stop/start, accelerate very gently. The transmission will be punchy if you're firm on the gas when it's cold, but if your foot is a little lighter, that will make a big difference.
Hope this is helpful!
Take care-
Michael.
