Walking is a great way to lose weight. Not only does it help keep your weight under control, but is also great for your cardiovascular system. Keep it up. Cutting down on the carbs will help a lot too. Your body will burn carbs if they are available instead of burning fat.
That said, skid is right about appetite, but as long as you make a point of cutting down the intake along with the exercise increasing, you can melt the weight off in short order, especially a young person. Believe me, as you get older, shedding weight will become MASSIVELY more difficult. If you don't set up good habits now, you will have a really tough time later on.
At almost 66 years of age, I consider myself fortunate to be at 185 pounds and 6'1". It's partially due to developing workout habits in my younger years and partially because I'm just lucky enough to have burning metabolism.
I am EXTREMELY lucky to not have a metabolism problem, and have never been very much overweight. I have known a few people quite well that had a REAL fight with it. Both of those guys worked really hard it and still had a tough time with it. One of them was really heavy and forced himself up and down a basketball court. It was amazing to watch him do it. I really admired him for his effort, not to mention he was a good basketball player.
