Honestly, it doesn't surprise me. Infiltrate the more radical wings of the organization, drive them to commit atrocities that would alienate the organization from any decent human being and increase support for Western boots on the ground. Why would they admit to being advisers if arrested? Perhaps to avoid being put in front of a firing squad out of hand.
