My OM606 doesn't consume any oil to speak of. I change it twice as often as the FSS requests, so about every 7K miles. It's not down appreciably at that time - no more than a half quart or so. I've never added oil between changes. Actually, right now its oil consumption is exactly zero, seeing as it's sitting at the shop with the head removed to extract a wayward glow plug...
Like any other diesel, the 606 knocks more when cold. It's so quiet when warmed up that I think it's especially shocking to hear it make noise on a cold morning. Mine just makes a soft clitter-clatter when warm - barely identifiable as a diesel.
